Preparation Canyon State Park

Preparation Canyon State Park directly neighbors Lewis and Clark State Park in Onawa, IA. The park is a stretch of land that once was the town of Preparation, a Mormon settlement on some of the richest farmlands of the region. The 344 acre park is mostly unscathed by human development, and its unique geography is surrounded by a striking ridgeline to the north, south, and west. The backdrop is perfect for a family picture or even photography buffs in search of a landscape portrait. Preparation Canyon State Park offers picnicking, hiking, and camping right at the north end of Loess Hills Pioneer State Forest. The park’s tables and a shelter (for larger groups) are provided for picnics and cookouts. Hikers will enjoy the number of trails as they wind through the rugged Loess Hills, along streams, and past springs in the area. There are nine hike-in campsites equipped with tables and fireplaces in the eastern side of the park along with a nature study area.
