Muchnic Art GalleryThe wood floors are so exquisite in the Muchnic Art Gallery that area rugs have to be strategically placed so as not to obscure the view of the intricate parquet designs carved out of walnut, oak and mahogany. The stately Victorian mansion in Atchison, Kansas, was built in 1885 by a lumber merchant who selected all the wood for the home’s interior. The finely carved woodwork extends well beyond the floors to the rooms and staircases. The Muchnic family bequeathed their home to the community to be used for artistic endeavors. Works by regional and national artists are on display here, along with some paintings belonging to the Muchnics. The first floor of the 14-room house contains the family’s furnishings and looks much as it did when they lived here in the early 1900s. The home is also notable for its stained glass windows and embossed leather paneling. A large carriage house graces the back yard. |
