Broken Kettle Grasslands PreserveThe Broken Kettle Grasslands Preserve is situated in the northern portion of the Loess Hills in Iowa, just north of Sioux City. The preserve extends about 3,000 acres and is predominantly grasslands with some steep and rugged terrain in spots. This area is managed by The Nature Conservancy and contains the largest remaining prairie in Iowa. The prairie ridgetops are home to a variety of plants and animals, most of which are usually found further west in the Great Plains. Some of the species of birds and animals that can seen here include coyote, badgers, the black-billed magpie, bobolinks, upland plover, western kingbird, prairie rattlesnake, Great Plains toad, plains spadefoot, and several types of prairie butterflies. There are also many species of plant life that make the Broken Kettle Grasslands Preserve home. Visitors to the area can enjoy hiking and taking in the beautiful scenery, as well as the diversity of flora and fauna. |
