Spirit Mound Historic PrairieSpirit Mound Historic Prairie carries both historic and mystical significance. Located five miles north of Vermillion in South Dakota, this day use park features rich prairie wildlife and magnificent views from the summit. Lewis and Clark found there interests piqued by the legends of little spirits living at Paha Wakan, as it was called by the Native Americans of the area. The two explorers took Lewis’ dog to see it for themselves and left the Corps of Discovery to continue along the river on August 25, 1804. Modern day adventurers will find they share the same sense of exhilaration as Lewis and Clark when reaching its vista. The hiking trail is a short jaunt from the parking lot, dotted with interpretive signs to tell the story of this mysterious place. The prairie wildflowers are spectacular, while these hallowed grounds blossom with butterflies, birds, and animals across the land and sky. Spirit Mound Historic Prairie’s 320 acres are the perfect grounds to observe mythic natural beauty at its best. |
