Elkhorn State ParkIt may look like a ghost town now, but back in its heyday in the 1880s, Elkhorn swelled its ranks to a population of 2,500. This once vibrant mining town had its own mill and smelter, producing more than $30,000 worth of ore each month. Residents cleared out when silver prices dropped and the boom ended. But they left behind two structures that have been preserved as impressive examples of frontier architecture. Take backcountry roads to Elkhorn State Park and visit Fraternity Hall and Gillian Hall, both recorded in the Historic American Buildings Survey. These are the only public buildings in the privately owned town. Take a camera along to photograph the buildings and wildlife in the area, which is near Boulder, Montana. Hay meadows north of town are great spots for sighting large groups of bull elk. Visit the historic Jefferson County Courthouse in Boulder. For relaxation, take a good soak in the town’s hot springs. |
