Beaverhead County MuseumLocated in a log building complex in an old railroad depot building, the Beaverhead County Museum collects, preserves, displays and interprets the local history of Dillon, Montana. Stroll through a homesteader’s cabin, and explore the museum’s Lewis and Clark diorama, natural history, mining and ranching exhibits, agricultural equipment and Indian artifacts. A one-room schoolhouse is currently being restored. A pavilion on the grounds is available for picnics. The trout-filled Beaverhead River flows through Dillon, and is a favorite spot for fly fisherman. The town’s history is also told in many historical photos. Recreational activities in the area include hiking, fishing, biking, snowmobiling, and both cross-country and downhill skiing. Not far from Dillon, the Elkhorn Hot Springs are nestled in the Pioneer Mountains; take a nice, long soak in the mineral waters. Another nearby attraction worth a visit is the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, a nesting area for the endangered trumpeter swan. |
