Fort Owen State ParkMajor John Owen built this fort in 1850 and established it as a regional trade center. The log and adobe cabin, now known as Fort Owen State Park, was the first permanent white settlement in Montana. Visit the restored rooms in the east barracks, furnished with period pieces, and view the artifacts on display. Browse through a small museum housed in a partially reconstructed building, and have a picnic on the grounds. The site near Stevensville Junction, about 25 miles from Missoula, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Scenic wilderness and recreation areas are in abundance in Missoula, which is located in an old glacial lakebed. It’s almost impossible to miss wildlife sightings. The fish are biting and ski slopes inviting. Go white water rafting, play a game of golf, tour the city on horseback or bicycle, and enjoy the museums and galleries. |
