Astoria Things To Do

Fort Clatsop

The explorers built their winter camp in Oregon in 1805 and named it Fort Clatsop in honor of the Clatsops, the friendly Indian tribe in the region. During their stay of more than 3 months, Captain William Clark prepared many of the maps developed throughout the journey, and the expedition members worked on their voluminous journals. The site of Fort Clatsop is now a national memorial, and consists of a reconstructed fort, along with exhibits and trails through the wetlands and rainforest. A fire destroyed the original replica in 2005, and an improved reconstruction stands on the same location. In Astoria, a deep water port, watch the ships glide along the Columbia River. Join other anglers in pursuit of salmon, steelhead trout, sturgeon and other varieties of fish, or bird watchers on the lookout for some of the more than 350 species recorded in Clatsop County. For a panoramic view of the city and the Pacific Ocean, climb the 125-foot Astoria Column and be prepared to be wowed.
