Flavel House MuseumThis elegant Victorian home sits on beautifully manicured grounds in Astoria, Oregon, and takes up an entire city block. The house, built in 1885, was home to Captain George Flavel, a noted Columbia River bar pilot, and his family. The decorative exterior of the Flavel House Museum, with its balconies, verandas and octagon tower, has been restored to its original look. Inside the architectural treasure, high ceilings and finely crafted woodwork, hand-carved mantels and imported tiles from around the world add to its beauty. Tour the grand entrance hall, parlor, formal dining room, conservatory, library and the music room where the Flavel daughters gave their recitals. The tower was the captain’s retreat, a place where he could gaze out at the city and the river. Outside, trees, shrubs and roses surround the home with lush greenery. A carriage house serves as a visitor center, museum shop and administrative office, but once held horses, carriages, sleighs, and in later years, cars. |
