Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-Tailed Deer

The Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer is located in southwestern Washington State and was established primarily to protect the endangered species of Columbian white-tailed deer. There are over 6,000 acres along the Columbia River that span across Washington, as well as Oregon, and contain brushy woodlots, forested tidal swamps, pastures, marshes, and sloughs. In addition to the resident white-tailed deer, there are Roosevelt elk, river otters, beaver, muskrats, and a large variety of wintering birds, reptiles and amphibians in the refuge. In addition to wildlife observation, recreational activities include hiking, boating and kayaking, fishing and hunting. There are a number of islands within the refuge that are accessible only by boat.
