In scenic Washougal, Washington is the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The area consists of over 1,000 acres of floodplain habitat, semi-permanent wetlands, woodlands of cottonwood and white oak, and pastures. The refuge is partly within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. There are guided birding hikes available at the refuge and there will soon be new trails, visitor facilities and parking. Steigerwald Lake supports breeding of a variety of birds, migrating and wintering ducks and geese. There is an auto route where you can take in the scenery and surrounding wildlife, a seasonal walking trail, and fishing and hunting opportunities.
