Billings Things To Do

Peter Yegen Jr. Yellowstone County Museum

This museum, a small log cabin near the entrance of Montana’s Billings Logan International Airport, preserves frontier history in the Yellowstone River basin through both pioneer and Indian artifacts. Collections in the Peter Yegen, Jr. Yellowstone County Museum include saddles, chaps, bridles, a chuck wagon and other ranch items, along with bonnets, moccasins, clothing and dolls that once belonged to Plains Indians. A room devoted to frontier women showcases clothing and hats worn by ladies in the Billings area around the turn of the century. The museum features an extensive photograph collection and many military artifacts. Also on display is the last steam engine ever used in Billings, donated to the museum in 1956 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. On the more unusual side, there’s a barbed wire collection and a stuffed two-headed calf. Step out on the deck for picture-perfect views of the Pryor and Beartooth mountains.
