Clearwater National Forest

The Clearwater National Forest spans 1.8 million acres in Idaho throughout the Bitterroot Mountains, along the Lochsa and Clearwater rivers, past the rolling hills of the Palouse Prairie, and through deep canyons. The diversity of the landscape provides the perfect habitat for an assortment of native wildlife. There are plenty of opportunities for fishing or taking on the whitewater of the rivers, hiking, enjoying a scenic drive, or participating in other outdoor recreational activities. The area is rich in history and used to provide travel routes across the mountains for Nez Perce Indians and the explorers of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The famous Lolo Trail is a rugged path that traverses through the mountains of Idaho within the forest’s boundaries and into Montana. The Nez Perce National Historic Trail also crosses through the forest. There are also plenty of campgrounds within the Clearwater National Forest.
