The Dalles Things To Do

Fort Dalles Museum and the Anderson Homestead

Oregon’s oldest history museum is housed in the surgeon’s quarters of a military complex in The Dalles that dates back to 1856. The Fort Dalles Museum features pioneer memorabilia, Native American artifacts, historic photographs and antique wagons. The U.S. Army fort, formerly known as Camp Drum, was a popular spot for Indians, fur traders, botanists, writers, artists and explorers, including those in the Lewis and Clark expedition. The surgeon’s quarters and a gardener’s cottage are all that remain of what was once a large, elaborate complex. Just across the street from the museum, the Anderson Homestead presents yet another opportunity to go back in time. The 1895 homestead consists of a house, made of hand-hewn tamarack and pine logs, along with a barn and granary. Don’t leave The Dalles without snapping a few shots of Mount Hood, a magnificent snow-covered peak that is home to a dozen glaciers.
