Confluence OverlookFrom this vantage point on U.S. Highway 95, overlooking the junction of the Clearwater and Snake rivers, the rolling grass slopes steeply down to the Clearwater River, more than a thousand feet below. Here, at Confluence Overlook, visitors can see part of the Nez Perce homeland. Two major cities nearby – Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Washington – are named for the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Donald MacKenzie had established a fur trading post for John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company at this site, but there were no beaver to be found in the area, and MacKenzie abandoned the site. The overlook is part of the Nez Perce National Historical Park in North Central Idaho. The park consists of 38 sites across the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. |
