MonDak Heritage CenterFill ’er up: In this replica of an early 20th century pioneer town, gas at the local filling station can still be had for 23 cents a gallon. The town is in the basement of the MonDak Heritage Center, which preserves the history and artifacts of a region encompassing seven counties in eastern Montana and western North Dakota. The town, circa 1910, includes, well, just about everything – homes, a mercantile shop, railroad depot, bank, school, post office, church, dentist’s office, blacksmith, sheriff’s department and hospital. Don’t forget the ice cream parlor, where cones were just a nickel back in the day. All the displays contain authentic items obtained in the surrounding area. Elsewhere at the center, an extensive research library, photo archive and newspapers offer up an abundance of historical information. The facility in Sidney, Montana, also houses a museum and art gallery, along with a dinosaur and fossil collection. |
