Huff Indian Village State Historic Site

The Mandan Indians lived here a short time – perhaps only two decades – but took great pains to protect themselves and their turf. The Huff Indian Village State Historic Site, a national landmark in Huff, North Dakota, contains the remnants of a large community surrounded by a massive fortification system. A ditch more than 2,000 feet long, with well-defined bastions, was set up around three sides of the village. This prehistoric settlement along the west bank of the Missouri River, dating back to about A.D. 1485, was likely home to an estimated 1,000 people. Depressions marking the location of rectangular homes are arranged in rows running parallel to the river bank. The site of this village is in pristine condition. Elsewhere in Huff, enjoy fishing and camping, or just take in the scenic parks, lakes and countryside.
