Camp Hancock State Historic Site

The Camp Hancock State Historic Site, initially established in 1872 as Camp Greeley, was a U.S. military post commissioned to protect work crews building the Northern Pacific Railroad, and their equipment. A log headquarters, remodeled and covered by clapboard, is the oldest known building in Bismarck, North Dakota, and now serves as an interpretive museum containing artifacts and exhibits. A 1909 Northern Pacific steam locomotive is also on site, along with the Church of the Bread of Life, known today as St. George’s Episcopal Church. Nearby attractions include the Art Deco-style state capitol building, the Dakota Zoo, the Gateway to Science museum, and the Port of Bismarck, where visitors can take a cruise along the upper Missouri River aboard the Lewis and Clark Riverboat, which operates daily between May and October.
