Fort Abraham LincolnFort Abraham Lincoln is located in Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, near Mandan, North Dakota. The fort was established in 1872 in preparation for the coming of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The fort, which contained both an infantry post and a cavalry post, was one of the largest and most important forts on the Northern Plains. General Custer was the first commander of Fort Abraham Lincoln from 1873 until he departed for Little Big Horn in 1876. The fort was eventually abandoned in 1891. Many of the important post structures have been rebuilt over the years and are open to visitors, including the home of General Custer, a barracks, a stable, granary, commissary storehouse and infantry post blockhouses. There is a visitor center and guided tours available. There is also a campground within the park. |
