Fort RandallFort Randall, which was established in 1856, is located below the Fort Randall Dam near the town of Pickstown, South Dakota. The military post was named for Colonel Daniel Randall and during the time it was an active post, from 1856 – 1892, it provided military protection to settlements along the Missouri River, served as the central military supply depot for the local area, and escorted survey parties and wagon trains. Visitors can now only see the Fort Randall Post Cemetery, Fort Randall Chapel and a few of the foundations of the original buildings – that is all that is left of the buildings. There is a Visitor Center and a self-interpretive trail around the site. The facility is open year-round. |
