Audubon National Wildlife RefugeWithin central North Dakota sits the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge. The almost 15,000 acres that comprise the refuge are located in an area called the prairie pothole region, which is an area of wetlands formed by glaciers many, many years ago. The landscape encompasses native prairie and planted grasslands, in addition to the wetlands. The refuge is maintained to meet the needs of migratory birds and waterfowl, resident wildlife and endangered species in the area. Visitors can take an auto tour along Lake Audubon to view the many species of plants and wildlife. There is also a self guided hiking trail. The spring and fall migration seasons are the best times to observe the many migrating birds and wildlife and also provide excellent opportunities for photography. |
