Ft. Pierre National GrasslandThe Ft. Pierre National Grassland comprises about 116,000 acres of land within Hughes, Sully, Stanley, Jones and Lyman counties in South Dakota. The area has a diverse habitat due to the inclusion of the Missouri River and Oahe Reservoir within the grassland area, the many farms and ranches that provide cropland, pasture, and rangeland, and even the urban areas of Pierre and Fort Pierce. There are many recreational activities within the Ft. Pierre National Grassland, including fishing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, camping, hunting, wildlife and bird watching, and more. Timber Creek and Sand Creek, located in the northeast corner of the grassland, include the important riparian habitat that over 90 percent of the prairie wildlife species depend on during their lifecycle. |
