Baltimore Bottom Unit, Big Muddy National Wildlife RefugeIn Lafayette County, Missouri is one of the smaller units of the Big Muddy National Wildlife Refuge, known as the Baltimore Bottom Unit. Most of this area has wide open areas, although there are also some areas of wet prairie and floodplain forest. There are large trees next to the river, and nearby is an interesting island in the Missouri River. There is a scour hole which was created recently by a flood in 2007 which is filled with river fish for anglers interested in fishing. The Baltimore Bottom Unit sits adjacent to the Baltimore Bend Conservation Area, which is separately managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Between the two areas, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and wildlife while bird watching, hiking, fishing, hunting or just studying and exploring the surrounding beauties of nature. |
