Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife RefugeThe Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife Refuge sits within the Mountain Prairie region of South Dakota, along the banks of the Missouri River. The refuge is primarily forest land filled with tall cottonwood trees and is the perfect place for wintering and nesting bald eagles. The adjoining river is filled with fish for the bald eagles who can search out their meal from the tall treetops above. The Karl Mundt refuge is not open to the public, but there is an observation point located below the Fort Randall Dam where visitors can view the impressive bald eagles soaring in the sky, with wingspans of up to eight feet. It is truly a sight to see! |
