Lewis and Clark Trail

Road Trip Planner

When the Lewis and Clark Expedition left Camp Dubois at the mouth of the Missouri River in 1804, their course was towards a world unknown. The disposition of the native tribes they were to encounter had yet to be determined. The scale of the Rocky Mountains was still unknown, and no route by which they could be crossed had yet been charted.

In seeking an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean, the Corps of Discovery navigated the Missouri River upstream through the Dakotas and across present-day Montana. They proceeded to cross the Rocky Mountains and then continued down to the Columbia River, reaching the Pacific Coast a year and a half after setting out.

This site helps you to plan a cheap vacation while exploring an important piece of American history. A road trip down the Lewis and Clark Trail is especially well suited to those owning a recreational vehicle, as affordable camping is available in scores of national parks, state parks, campgrounds and RV parks located along the entire length of the route.
